S.O.T. is not simply
technique but more of a philosophy that goes beyond technique into the
areas of diagnostic and treatment protocols. Dr. Major B.
DeJarnette, to give a Chiropractic approach of dealing with man
as a totality developed Sacro Occipital Technique.
The therapeutic goal is to attempt to reverse the patterns of disharmony,
thereby promoting health. The technique involves the use of blocks,
adjusting joints, organ/soft tissue reflex manipulation and eventual
cranial corrections. The use of blocks is a safe, gentle, effective
means to enhance the body’s Natural Healing Momentum
and reverse the PATTERNS OF DISHARMONY that have occurred
in the body. The most important principle is to honor the WINDOW
OF TREATMENT OPPORTUNITY correcting only what is indicated and to
do so with the least amount of force required. The use of the body's
internal force - respiration, will provide the necessary force to set the Natural
Healing Momentum in motion.
Man is a series of triangles
(Pythagorean' Theorem) existing in a state of balance. Our body will
naturally maintain proper awareness of its orientation in space and normal
physiologic function. However, when some distortion of this
triangulation occurs, it will cause changes in other areas of the
body. Typically, following a disruption in pelvic or lower
limb biomechanics. In order to correct this situation, it would be ideal
to know which section was the initial cause. This would reduce
the use of further force to correct the imbalance by decreasing the number
of joints manipulated. Since the body can endure only a certain
amount of change without rejection, a system of indicators is used to aid
in knowing when you have accomplished the optimal level of correction on
subsequent visits. The goal then is to allow the body to heal
on its own through the return of normal structural and physiologic
function.
Sacro Occipital Technique is a unique
method of chiropractic CRITICAL POINT ANALYSIS AND TREATMENT.
Critical Point Analysis is achieved by recognition of specific
pattern of disharmony, which occur in defense of the body. Critical
Point Analysis is a technique derived from the fact that in any highly
complex system there is a specific, critical point at which the smallest
input will result in the greatest change, i.e. unscrewing a light bulb vs.
flipping a switch. Sacro Occipital Technique recognizes patterns of
disharmony and has specific names for them, i.e. Categories I, II, III,
Crest, Dollar, etc. The names for patterns of disharmony are
convenient labels used to describe how the parts of the body function in
relation to each other and the whole.
Treatment is giving according to the
pattern of disharmony with the greatest need for correction.
Critical point treatment is used to create the greatest amount of change
with the least amount of input. Recognizing that no part of
the body, mind or spirit (ALSO KNOWN AS THE TRIUNE OF WELL BEING)
can be excluded or separated from the whole.
Treatment may include any of the following procedures:
Blocking Procedures
The blocks are recognized as
the trademark
of
a SOT practitioner. These wedge shaped blocks were developed out of
serendipity. Called to the farm of a large German farmer in
Nebraska, Dr. DeJarnette found it necessary to use a lever to create force
to roll the farmer over. Using a board as a lever, Dr. DeJarnette
placed the board under the farmer’s hip and pushed down on the board to
roll him over. Miraculously, the farmer’s pain was gone.
A recent study brain mapping with
computerized electroencephalography before and after a treatment with
the blocks demonstrated how effective the treatment is on a patient with
a history of hyperactivity, respiratory problems and migraines. To read
the study click on the blocks.
Dr. DeJarnette researched and developed
the blocks that are currently used to correct the Categories I, II and III
patterns of dysfunction.
